INFORMATION
FOR PARENTS
Frequently primary teeth are neglected and not cared precisely
because of the belief that they are temporary and not so important.
However primary teeth are as important as permanent teeth
for nutrition, speaking and esthetics.
Also they maintain space for permanent teeth. Early loss
of the primary teeth because of an abscess or pain is the
most important factor of malocclusion.
When the permanent tooth erupts, primary tooth gains mobility
and is lost. If this doesn’t happen in the proper way, problems
can occur in the permanent teeth.
PERMANENT TEETH OF CHİLDREN
First primary tooth erupts about 6 years. This tooth has
to stay in mouth for the whole life. In the mixed dentition
period children can not provide good oral hygiene and most
of the carries forms during this period. If there are carries
in primary teeth, permanent teeth are also infected.
If they gain brushing habit in these ages, this will help
permanent teeth to stay in mouth for a long time.
WHY DO THE PRİMARY TOOTH DECAY?
Primary teeth decay more easily and quickly then the permanent
teeth because of their structural properties. Frequently consumed
sugary foods and inadequate oral hygiene increases carry risk.
Last researches proved that carries is infectious.
Children may not realize the sensitivity to cold and hot
or pain which are the early symptoms of tooth decay. When
there is unbearable pain, it can be too late for treatment.
Not treated tooth decay can cause pain, chewing difficulty,
bad breath, nutrition handicaps and bad esthetics. It can
also cause general health problems.
WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR CHİLD FROM TOOTH DECAY
Parents play an important role in children’s oral health.
Parents should teach children how to brush properly and they
should direct them to brush at least twice a day before sleeping
and after breakfast.
Insufficient brushing causes results similar to never brushing.
Once in six mouths topical flour application should be performed
by dentist. This application strengthens tooth surface towards
carries.
Sugary foods increases tooth decay risk. Children should
be limited in consuming these foods. Parents can give these
types of food only during main meals.
Fissure sealants should be performed by the dentist to your
children as soon as possible.
FISSUR
SEALANT
Decays are most frequently seen on chewing surfaces of the
teeth. In early ages decay forming is prevented by fissure
sealants. There are deep grooves and pits on the surfaces
of children’s back teeth. Fissure sealant fills these grooves
and prevents food accumulation.
